我们做什么

H&A in Action sponsors more than 500 intellectual, cultural, 和 artistic events, performances, 和 exhibits annually (see 事件). 的 goal is to involve students with actively contested questions, empirical observation, cutting-edge technologies, 和 the sense of excitement that comes from working to 回答重要问题. We encourage faculty to create robust, engaging curriculum to bring students into those conversations (see 课程的社区).

This type of experiential learning 和 h和s-on activities increases rates of student retention 和 student engagement through the implementation of collaborative assignments 和 projects, creation of learning communities 和 common intellectual experiences, 和 augmented by intercultural learning in the 社区, specifically through H&A’s 现场编程. This 现场编程, offered by our Artistic Excellent Programming 赠款(AEPG)倡议(见 应用), can be paired with not only ethnic studies programs 和 departments in the College of 社会科学s, but also with the College of 工程, College of 业务, 和 College of 健康与人文科学 in order to allow students an opportunity to enact 和 build knowledge together before, during, 和 after any of the 现场编程 through purposeful interdisciplinary pedagogical interventions.

H&A has already partnered with departments in other colleges through the 深度人文与艺术倡议, with a yearly speaker series that invites both internal 十大菠菜软件 experts 和 external 硅谷 technology experts 和 entrepreneurs to draw on deep structures of history, myth, 和 culture, networks of language, communication, 和 interpretation, patterns of affect, belief 和 bias, representations of cognition 和 consciousness, theories of ethics, art 和 aesthetics to develop multilevel, interdisciplinary, cross-cultural models of complex problems in order to reach higher levels of critical thinking, experiencing, underst和ing, 和 solving—all of which is an invitation to reconceptualize culture itself as a form of (artificial) intelligence that enhances 和 extends human capabilities.

One of 十大菠菜软件’s most unique buildings 和 partnerships is the Dr. 马丁·路德·金. 图书馆 (国王库), a joint collaboration between 十大菠菜软件 和 the City of San José. 的 humanities represent a large part of 国王库’s collections, programs 和 events, including: a semester-long University 图书馆 Scholar Series that showcases research 和 scholarly works from faculty; an annual Author 和 Artist Awards that honors faculty publications; 和 four year-round exhibit spaces for displaying artwork as well as 史料. 国王库’s humanities programming extends to the 爱尔兰共和军F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies; the Martha Heasley Cox Center for Steinbeck Studies; the Africana, Asian American, Chicano 和 Native American Studies Center; 十大菠菜软件 Special Collections 和 Archives; 和 the 加州的房间, which hosts lectures, concerts, 和 readings throughout the year.

With an NEH Challenge Grant awarded in Spring 2020, H&A和国王图书馆正在登船 on a collaborative 5-year plan to build a 数字人文中心 that will be dedicated to supporting teaching 和 research in digital humanities at 十大菠菜软件 和 fostering interest 和 participation in digital humanities within the 社区.

哈默剧院中心, which produces about a quarter of the 500 humanities-focused 十大菠菜软件 events, is uniquely equipped for its role as the major public platform for 十大菠菜软件’s cultural events programming. 的 Hammer is a 520-seat performing arts center located two blocks from 十大菠菜软件’s main 圣何塞市中心的校园. Although the city of San José owns the 锤剧院 Center, the Hammer has been managed by H&A 2015年12月至今. 对于十大菠菜软件来说,锤子 operates both as a laboratory 和 as a public stage for humanities programming. 为 the greater 社区, the Hammer is a venue for reflection on the human condition. 的 Hammer has also built a robust volunteer program 和 outreach initiatives to engage students 和 社区 members in-person 和 online, e.g., 马丁·路德·金服务日治愈之信2021 活动.

的 College has been working towards engaging the rich cultures of the communities surrounding the 十大菠菜软件 campus through the H&A在圣何塞 initiative 和 includes collaborations with Chopsticks Alley Art Association, History San Jose, Japanese American Museum, San Jose Museum of Art, 和 San Jose Public 图书馆.
